A Guide to Stockholm Subway Art: World’s Longest Art Gallery
Did you know that Stockholm has the world’s longest art gallery? The subway system in Stockholm is home to some of the most beautiful and interesting artwork in the world.
Each station is decorated with its own unique design, and there are paintings and sculptures from some of the world’s most famous artists. So, if you’re looking for something to do in Stockholm, be sure to check out the subway art.
I have been living in Stockholm for over 4 years and I haven’t completely explored the coolest metro stations!
Stockholm’s metro stations are unlike any other in the world, with each one a work of art, architecture, and design. As part of an ongoing project started in the 1950s to adorn Stockholm’s metro stations, around 250 artists have been involved. The world’s longest art gallery incorporates 94 of the city’s 100 metro stations.

How to get around Stockholm
The best way to see the Stockholm subway art is by taking the subway. The subway system in Stockholm is one of the most efficient and easy to use in the world. And, since most of the stations are decorated with artwork, it’s a great way to see some of the city’s best sights.
You can use your contactless card to buy a ticket as you go. At the end of the day, the number of tickets used throughout the day and the total amount due will be calculated. The charge for this will be taken from your contactless card account.
The ticket will be valid for 75 minutes.
You can also purchase your tickets from the SL app.
The Stockholm metro (subway, t-bana, or tunnelbana) has 3 lines: red, green, and red line.
Best time to see Stockholm’s Subway Art
The best time to see Stockholm’s subway art is between 10 AM to 3 PM, outside of peak commuting times.
When visiting the Stockholm subway, you can expect to see a wide variety of artwork, from paintings and sculptures to mosaics and installations. Each station has its own unique design, and there is something for everyone to enjoy.

You can also stay a little bit more until commuters left the station if you want to take photos.
I took this photo at Fridhemsplan station at around 8 PM on a Friday.

Stockholm Subway Art Tour Itinerary
If you want to see as much of the Stockholm subway art as possible, I recommend taking a guided tour. There are a number of companies that offer tours, and they will take you to all of the best stations.
SL offers free guided tours of the Stockholm Subway Art and booking is not required. Just make sure you have a valid SL ticket.
You can also explore the Stockholm subway art on your own, but it can be difficult to find all of the best artwork. To help you out, I’ve put together an itinerary of some of the best stations to visit.
The best way is to start from Kungsträdgården (one of the best places to see cherry blossoms) which is a blue line.
